Website Audit Checklist
What You Get
A prompt that runs a comprehensive audit of your website across 7 categories: messaging clarity, user experience, SEO basics, page speed, mobile experience, conversion points, and trust signals. You get a prioritized list of what’s broken and what to fix first.
The Prompt
Copy this into Claude and paste your website’s HTML (or just describe it — Claude will work with either):
Audit my website across these 7 categories and tell me exactly what to fix first.
I'm going to give you information about my website. Please audit it across these 7 specific areas and score each one from 1-10. For each category, tell me the specific issues you found (not general advice — specific things I can actually fix). Then give me your top fix for that category. At the end, give me a prioritized "Fix This First" list of the top 5 things to address, ordered by impact on leads/sales.
Here's what I need from you first:
1. What's your website URL? (or just paste the homepage HTML)
2. What's your website supposed to do? (Generate leads, sell products, book calls, build an email list, something else?)
3. Who's your target audience? (Be specific — therapists? e-commerce businesses? solopreneurs?)
4. What's your main frustration with your site right now?
5. Do you have Google Analytics or any tracking installed? (If you know.)
Once you tell me that, I'll audit your site across:
1. Messaging
- Can a stranger tell what you do and who you help within 5 seconds?
- Is your headline specific or vague?
- Is there a clear call-to-action above the fold?
2. User Experience
- Is navigation intuitive?
- Can someone get to the important pages in 2 clicks?
- Is there visual hierarchy?
3. SEO Basics
- Title tags and meta descriptions
- Heading structure (H1, H2s)
- Alt text on images
- Internal linking
- Do you have a blog or content?
4. Page Speed
- Are images optimized?
- Any obvious bloat or unnecessary code?
- (Note: I'll flag common issues, not run a full speed test)
5. Mobile Experience
- Is it responsive?
- Are buttons tap-friendly?
- Is text readable without zooming?
6. Conversion
- Are there clear CTAs?
- Email capture anywhere?
- Contact forms — where are they, and can people find them?
- Is the path from landing to action obvious?
7. Trust
- Social proof or testimonials?
- About page that builds credibility?
- Contact info visible?
- Does it look professional and current?
For each category, I'll give you a 1-10 score and the specific problems I found. Then I'll list exactly how to fix the #1 issue in that category. Be specific. Don't tell me "improve your messaging." Tell me "Your headline says Welcome to Our Website — change it to [specific alternative that works for your business]." Specific enough that I can fix it today.
How to Use It
Step 1: Copy the prompt above into Claude (claude.ai or your app).
Step 2: Paste your website’s HTML into the chat (or just describe your site if you don’t have the HTML handy).
Step 3: Answer the 5 setup questions. Then Claude will audit you across all 7 categories.
Key insight: Most website problems are messaging problems. If your site doesn’t pass the 5-second test — can a stranger tell what you do and who you help in 5 seconds — nothing else matters. Not your SEO. Not your design. Not your page speed. Fix messaging first. Everything else is secondary.
Pro tips:
- Paste your actual homepage HTML into the chat for the most accurate audit.
- Run this audit on your competitors’ sites too. You’ll learn what works.
- Re-run this every quarter. Your website should evolve as your business does.
Example Output
Here’s what a real audit looks like. (These are two of the 7 categories for a fictional therapist’s website.)
Messaging — Score: 4/10
What I found:
- Your headline says “Welcome to My Practice” — that tells me nothing about what you do or who you help.
- The subheader is “Compassionate therapy for a better life” — still vague. Better than nothing, but it could be 10x more specific.
- Your main CTA (“Get Started”) is buried below the fold. Most people won’t scroll that far.
- No clear statement of who you help. Are you for people with anxiety? Therapists in transition? Parents? I can’t tell.
The #1 fix: Rewrite your headline to something specific like “Therapy for therapists in career transition” or “Anxiety treatment for high-achieving professionals” — whatever actually describes your niche. Put it as your H1, make it 8-12 words, and add a CTA button right below it. A stranger should be able to read that headline and know if they’re in the right place.
Conversion — Score: 3/10
What I found:
- No email capture on your homepage. You’re not building a list.
- Your contact form is on a separate page with no visible link from the homepage.
- No booking widget. People who want to schedule with you can’t do it in one click.
- The “Get Started” button goes to a generic contact form, not a booking page.
- No social proof. No testimonials visible above the fold.
The #1 fix: Add an email capture form to your homepage (above the fold). Lead with something specific: “Get my free 5-day email course on therapy for therapists” or “Join 200+ therapists who get my monthly tips.” Then add a booking widget (use Calendly or similar) on your homepage and in your footer. Make scheduling a one-click action.
See the difference? Specific issues. Specific fixes. Actionable today.
Tips
1. The 5-second test is everything. Have a friend (or a stranger) look at your homepage for 5 seconds without reading anything. Ask them: “What does this person do and who do they help?” If they can’t answer, your messaging isn’t clear yet. This matters more than anything else.
2. Don’t try to fix all 7 categories at once. You’ll burn out. Start with messaging and conversion. Those two things drive the most leads. Then tackle UX and mobile. SEO and speed can wait a quarter.
3. The best audit is one you actually act on. Print the “Fix This First” list and tape it to your monitor. Pick the top 2 fixes and do them this week. You don’t need perfection. You need progress.
4. If your site is more than 2 years old and you haven’t updated it, you probably need a rebuild more than an audit. Technology changes, design trends shift, and your business evolves. That’s okay. You’re not behind. You’re just ready for the next version.
